Month at a Glance — December

A breakdown of the latest happenings and significant milestones taking place within the Tezos ecosystem for the month of December.

Welcome to our latest issue of Month at a Glance where we breakdown most of the latest happenings and significant milestones taking place within the Tezos ecosystem on a monthly cadence.

The month of December was another stellar month for Tezos in terms of on-chain metrics, usage, and further adoption.

Let’s break it all down.

Ecosystem Insights

December was another month for the books. 2021 has been an eventful and prosperous year as a whole as we dawn on a new year.

Let’s start off with network metrics. Contract calls have made new highs all throughout the year, thanks to a novel mechanism to Tezos (on-chain protocol upgrades) and real organic adoption of NFTs.

Protocol upgrades amalgamated with organic NFT interest have encompassed for the vast majority of contract calls on Tezos to date, just since April.

Tezos has showcased throughout the year a new movement and pivot for artists and creators infuriated from issues plaguing other platforms/networks, not just limited to feature sets. We’ve seen a whole new culture and community emerge from this movement that has begun to define it.

That culture has led to the creation of original art, creative and intuitive applications of their art, and an experimental atmosphere that would not be available much elsewhere. One would be pressed to find a more vibrant community and group of collectors and artists than what we’ve seen come to the Tezos network.

In terms of protocol upgrades, Ithaca, the most recent and 9th protocol upgrade injected into the Tezos network is undergoing voting. Of all the features, the most noteworthy is the introduction of Tenderbake, a novel feature which will improve finality.

Undoubtedly, one of the great things about Tezos is its ability to evolve and adapt over time via the governance mechanism. It’s the ultimate value proposition and will likely gain further prominence when other networks inevitably end up delaying an upgrade.

The mere fact these other networks are transitioning towards Proof of Stake (PoS) should paint a vivid picture of where things are moving. It seems very unlikely we’ll see a stunt in the Layer-1 trajectory that we’ve been witnessing throughout the year.

This has been part of a growing theme within core development teams to begin to utilize base layer capabilities, but also shift towards welcoming layer-2 applications on Tezos.

All that said, with Tezos not only is the network able to evolve and amend seamlessly — it has continued throughout the test of time to grow and be used in practice, not theory.

Recapping general news, 2021 was not shy of that for Tezos. In no particular order, here were some of the highlights we saw.

Societe Generale issued the first structured product* as a Security Token directly registered on the Tezos public blockchain.Ubisoft, leading creator, publisher and distributor of interactive entertainment and services, including the Assassin’s Creed series, has joined the Tezos ecosystem as a corporate baker.Red Bull Racing Honda confirms a new multi-year technical partnership with Tezos, as the Team’s Official Blockchain Partner.McLaren Racing announces new multi-year technical partnership to build NFT fan experience platform on energy-efficient blockchain network Tezos.Tezos ecosystem joins N.Y. Happy New Year, Tezos community!
