Month at a Glance — April 2023

A breakdown of the latest happenings and significant milestones taking place within the Tezos ecosystem for the month of April 2023.

Welcome to our latest issue of Month at a Glance where we give a quick breakdown of the latest happenings and significant milestones taking place within the Tezos ecosystem on a monthly cadence.

April 2023 was a big month for technical development and adoption with the latest Tezos upgrade proposal named ‘Nairobi’ that was announced on April 13, 2023 and the Tezos NFT Summit. We were also treated to the long-awaited release of Batcher by Marigold which is a batch-processing order book DEX.

Let’s break it all down.

Ecosystem Insights

Welcome to Nairobi!

Protocol Mumbai was activated on the Tezos network on May 29th. Following on the heels of the activation, we learned of the next potential Tezos upgrade called Nairobi. Nairobi has been injected and is currently undergoing voting by the Tezos community, so be sure to get out there and vote!

Nomadic Labs gave us a preview of the changes and more through their blog post.

In short, the Nairobi protocol proposal contains several updates and improvements to the Tezos economic protocol, the most prominent being:

An up to 8x increase in TPS for certain manager operations (including tez transfers and smart contract calls).Improved gas model for signatures to reflect the cost of different curves.Renaming endorsements to attestations.Faster propagation of pre-attestations to reach consensus earlier.New host functions for Smart Rollups, and new internal Layer 2 messages allowing rollup kernels to be aware of Tezos protocol upgrades.

This upgrade comes as another addition to the ecosystem-wide focus on improving scalability, Layer-1 applications, and more development on rollups. It’s no secret that Tezos is spearheading scalability, Layer-1 development, rollups, and doing it in real-time as co-founder Arthur Breitman mentioned in his recent interview with Tezos Foundation members Mason Edwards and Roman Schnider.

We will dive deeper into the upgrade in an upcoming publication, so be on the lookout for that!

Highlights from the Tezos NFT Summit

Tezos had a large presence in NYC for the Tezos NFT Summit earlier last month. Tezos Commons also sponsored an event the day before the summit with artist Victoria West who named the meetup, Tez Art Connect. For those who were not able to make it, Stu Elmes published a great recap on our site highlighting the whole event and some key takeaways.

For those building out practical real-world applications for NFTs here in the Tezos ecosystem, however, bullishness reigns. Spend 5 minutes talking to an artist who’s established themselves and built a career here in the Tezos space, and you’ll quickly see that enthusiasm for this technology and its game-changing promise is alive and well. From the crowds of eager young artists attending the Tezos NFT Summit in the hopes of having their portfolios reviewed by the panel of industry experts on hand at the event, to the collectors, artists, and enthusiasts who made their way to the gallery showings tied to it, it was easy to see that the digital arts scene is very much alive and well here in the Tezos ecosystem.

With the blockchain space having been in a cooldown period for quite some time now, it’s rather refreshing to see this kind of genuine optimism and passion that exists within the NFT community here on Tezos.

Other attendees like Solomon Lederer of Trilitech also shared the same opinion.

TC Community Rewards Program and updates on the Small Grants Program

The Community Rewards Program (CRP) is a Tezos Commons Foundation initiative aimed at fostering adoption and supporting the Tezos ecosystem. Every month up to 5,000 tez are rewarded to those that stand out in merit and act in the interest of the Tezos ecosystem as a whole.

In an endeavor to make it easier for community members to nominate their favorite contributors to the ecosystem, the nomination form has been drastically streamlined. Now containing only three questions, it takes less than 30 seconds to submit a nomination.

Don’t have 30 seconds? You can tag any discord message or tweet with #TezosCRP and we will collect them as well!

The categories and nomination standards have remained the same. For more information head over to the refreshed landing page here. We’ve also announced March 2023 winners, so be sure to check out the recap on that here.

Lastly, we also announced a new small grant nominee, CodeCrafting! CodeCrafting has been hard at work as a developer in the Tezos ecosystem as a former head developer at InterPop. He’s also one of the team members behind Crunchy.Network which recently deployed a new Tezos token tracker for DeFi assets on Tezos and is preparing a release of sliced.art, a new specialty purpose platform for fractionalizing NFTs on Tezos.

His latest project called focused.art will be a new creator-centric platform with a focus on catering to creators within the Tezos NFT space.

You can learn more about the small grants program and apply here.
